Steubenville Northwest--July, 2017
Aug 2, 2017Read Youth Minister April Waldrop's reflection on the Steubenville Northwest Weekend in Spokane, held July 28-30, that she attended with six Assumption and Sacred Heart high school youth:
Recently, I had the incredible privilege of taking six of our Bellingham teens to the Steubenville Northwest conference in Spokane, WA. We started out Friday morning by driving across the state together, stopping at a few fun locations along the way and playing almost every car game we could think of to keep ourselves entertained. Once we arrived, we checked in, dropped our belongings off in the Gonzaga dorm rooms where we were staying the night, and headed to dinner.
The conference itself started that evening and we were introduced to the musicians and speakers that would be leading us in worship and faith growing during the weekend. There were some well-known Catholic speakers and a very engaging band there to share their talents with us. The room filled up with over 1,500 Catholic teenagers and right from the start, there was such a powerful positive energy in the room with everyone joining their voices together in excitement, singing to God and praying with one another.
Throughout the weekend, we heard various talks, went to different workshops based on our interests, engaged with the dozens of Priests and religious brothers and sisters that were walking around, went to Mass together each day, and sat in Adoration together every evening. Adoration was one of the most powerful experiences of the weekend. Being in a room full of young Catholics, silently on their knees, reaching towards the Lord in the Eucharist, opening up their hearts to God’s love for the first time… it was incredible. I have so many stories and moments that I would love to share with each of you, things that we learned and ways I saw the Holy Spirit moving powerfully through our teens. I encourage and welcome you to ask me, or one of our teens, in person to share with you.
Here is a reflection from one of the teens who attended ...
“This being my first retreat, I didn't really know what to expect other than we were going to have mass and pray; the usual. But at Steubenville I was really able to connect with Jesus in a way that I never have before. During Adoration on Saturday night, for the first time, Jesus entered into my heart and lifted a weight off my shoulders. It was an eye-opening experience. I'm also very excited about all the new prayers and ways to connect with Jesus that I learned from the retreat, and that I now know how to connect with Jesus in a deeper way. Steubenville was a lot of fun and I can't wait for next year!” - Natalie Z.
